QCED is made up of the Barbershop Quartet Champions of the Evergreen District. We are all the Barbershop Harmony Society quartets that have won any district or the international contest. The Evergreen District is made up of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Washington, Montana, Alaska, British Columbia and Alberta. Our members also include Champions from other districts that now reside here.

QCED Mission: QCED is committed to the preservation, promotion, education and development of quartet singing in the barbershop style within and on behalf of the Evergreen District. These goals will be pursued by the membership through any responsible educational and promotional means available including, but not limited to, public clinics and schools, coaching seminars as well as interaction with music educators in developing and fostering four-part harmony within the community and increasing public awareness of our style of music.

History

How did we get here?

Back in 1972–at the Islander Resort on Lopez Island, WA–several past District champions had been talking about getting a group together with the purpose of “upgrading the calibre of performance of Evergreen District Quartets.” Their objectives were to:

  • provide fellowship with others who have won the District Championship,
  • promote and encourage quartet singing within the District,
  • support and promote efforts to advance the level of singing, coaching, and judging skills within the District, and
  • give financial assistance to quartets representing the District in International Competition.

In those early years, we gathered at the Lopez Islander Inn, mostly for our own entertainment. We would put on a show on Saturday night for the locals. For over ten years the group grew slowly. Finally it became apparent the Lopez Island location was too remote to guarantee attendance by many of the former champs, nor could we sustain a good-sized audience at shows. In 1985, through the untiring efforts of the late Bob Swanson, the annual QCED meeting and show was moved to Seaside, Oregon as a joint venture with the Seaside Chamber of Commerce. For the past 34 years or so, we teamed with the Seaside Oregon Chamber of Commerce to put on a fundraiser show in their Convention Center.

With the great oceanside atmosphere, shops and restaurants, the new location was an instant success with QCEDers, their families, and fans alike. After 40 years of existence QCED has given tens of thousands of dollars to the promotion and betterment of our unique style of four-part harmony.

Recently, the Seaside venue has become busier, so we rethought that relationship.

What now?

Ocean Shores, Washington

There are enough of us that we also perform as a chorus, and if I do say so myself, we are quite good. Starting last year (2019) we held our show at the Ocean Shores, Washington Convention Center. It was most likely our best show ever. We received rave reviews, and will be repeating at that venue on February 22, 2020. We found the local people very receptive, and the town has a lot to offer.

With the enthusiasm is as high as it was last year, we will consider repeating there again. And again. Don’t miss it!
